Day 26- Homer

July 7

It's very hard to keep the camper at a comfortable level at night which makes it difficult to sleep.  I like it cooler but the girls like it warm so they turn on the fireplace.  I keep my door closed to keep the heat out but it keeps the humidity from breathing trapped in the room which can get uncomfortable.

I woke up about 5am and couldn't get comfortable to get back to sleep.  I tried opening the window but that really didn't do it.  Finally I said screw it and turned on the A/C.  The pulled out the humid air and I was finally able to rest again.  Because I was not feeling well the night before and being uncomfortable I didn't wake up again until 10.

Libby also went to bed not feeling well and she was feeling even worse when she woke up.  First thing I did after I got cleaned up was to run to the grocery store for liquid Tylenol.  The girls still have not mastered swallowing pills.

Summer, Heidi and I went out to watch the beach.  It was low tide and I figured we would see some cool stuff left behind.

I was not wrong.  We came up to a pool and I found a small mound with wet looked like dirt rope on top.  Obviously something was buried in the sand.  I found out later it was a worm of some kind and the rope was kinda like worm poop.  Not really though.  the worm ingests the sand and it extracts the nutrients as it passes through and expelled it out the other side.

I thought I had found something really cool, a tiny barnacle stuck to a rock.  Pretty cute.  Picked up to save only to walk another 20 feet and barnacles stuck to rocks as far as the eye can see.

My best find of the day was the shell from a Dungeness crab.  I asked around and everyone said it was a molt and a really good find.  It did appear that the legs and pinchers were a few feet away but they were not in good condition so I didn't keep them.

Heidi also had a great find, a jellyfish.  It was solid and totally clear.  No tentacles.  Very similar to the ones you see at zoo's lit up with the blacklights.  Summer was in heaven as she wants a bet jelly fish.  Yes, it's a thing.

Heidi kept finding purple clam shells and was collecting them for a craft she wanted to do.  Summer was happy just touching and playing with everything.  There were a few guys snag fishing so I headed out towards them to see what they were catching.  They were trying for Silver's (salmon) but only had gotten a few kings.  They did point out that there was a starfish near the waters edge.  A starfish was something I was hoping to see.  I was not sure if they would be in this cold of water but figured low tide would be a great place to find one.  It was pretty big.  About the size of an adult face and purple.

After we got tired of walking the shore we went back to the camper for lunch and got ready to go to the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge.

It was a nice place and we listened to a short program about the Aleutian volcanoes.  There was also a hike from the parking lot that took us back out to the beach and we walked along it for awhile.

Afterwards we drove the length of the spit.  There is a large harbor on one side, several tourist shops on the other.  Places to eat dotted both sides.   I keep seeing signs for Alaskan made ice cream.  I kind of want to go ask what the difference is from ice cream made anywhere else.  Maybe they use glacier ice and sea salt instead of ice cubes and rock salt to freeze it.

I wanted see about renting a fishing pole to fish off the beach.   Prices were not bad.  $25 for 24 hours.  Plus any bait or tackle.   And you can use the same pole for salmon, halibut or whatever is in the area.  they also have a lagoon you can fish.  If I restrung my walleye poles with 20lb test and set the drag loose I could easily use that in the lagoon.  Kind of iffy for the salmon off shore.  I might rent one the last day we are here.  Even if I catch nothing it will be a cool experience.

While we were in the tackle shop a guy came in that was fishing the lagoon.  He mentioned that no one was catching anything but there were a couple seals swimming around.   Of course we had to go check it out.

Back at the camper, Libby was still in bed.  The four of us headed out to dinner while she stayed back.  On recommendation we went to Alice's Champagne Palace.  We lucked out as they had live music that was just starting.  The food and music were both excellent.  If we didn't have to get up at 5am for out halibut charter tomorrow I would have been happy to bring the girls back to the camper while Heidi and I went back to listen to the music and hang out.

When we got back we pre-packed for fishing.  Libby was kinda coming around.  I needed to run into town for a few things, mainly something to block the light coming through the ceiling vent over Summer's bed.  When the sun never set's, it never gets dark in the loft.  Libby came with to see if there was anything she felt like eating.  She finally settled on some instant noodle soup.

Davan finally also said the reason she was grumpy all day is because she was not feeling well either and didn't sleep much last night.  I'm also getting congested again, but one of the good things about a cpap is the humidity will clear you up pretty quickly.

Destruction Bay Redux

I alluded to a bit of a mishap when we boondocked near Destruction.  At the time I just wanted to put it behind me.  I was not sure I wante...
