No milage data for today. Short distance so I'm combining with tomorrow.
Stayed at Liard Hot Spring RV Park
Day 7- Liard Hot Springs
After a quick cleanup of the camper we were off to Double G campground. I read on Facebook that this was the place to go.
The place is run by Jack. He is the cashier, waiter, reservation taker, and head chief. The only thing he does not do is bus tables and wash dishes. Jack is a rugged man that takes no shit, tells you how it is wither you like it our not. Every movement has a purpose, and no action is wasted. If he is moving and you’re in his path you need to move, or he will run you over. I like Jack.
The exterior looks like any type of log cabin type building. But walking in transports you back in time. The interior was simple. It was L shaped. As you walk in the door you are greeted by the thick smoke and smells of breakfast. There is an exhaust hood over the flat top, but I’m sure it has not worked in years. In front of you is a simple counter, to your right was a wall of candy bars and trinkets. At the end of the wall was an old cooler filled with drinks. To your left was the dining area and kitchen. The walls were lined with kitschy signs. On the counter separating the dining area and kitchen were huge loafs of fresh baked bread. Behind the counter was Jack with a simple greeting of, “What’ll you have to eat?”
Summer has bene on a French fry kick the last few days. Jack over heard her rushing from the register to kitchen and simply stated, “I have no fries on my menu”. There was no more request of fries from Summer. When Jack spoke, people listened.
I ordered the Geriatric breakfast which has 2 eggs, choice of meat, hashbrowns and toast. One of the meat options was beef sausage. I asked how it was. I’m not going to tell you they are bad, was the reply. Have I mentioned that I like Jack?
The girls each wanted pancakes. I also ordered a cinnamon roll. Jack told me he would save me some money and told me to order one pancake for the girls as it was very large. I must have earned Jacks respect as he told me during one of his trips between the kitchen and register that I’m one of the very few that’s listens when he says how large the pancakes are. He was not kidding either. It was easily 3/4 of an inch thick and probably 15” round. It was huge! Summer and Davan loved it, Libby not as much. I think it had cornmeal in it that made it a bit gritty. It also fell apart easily. But it was so good.
My breakfast was good as well. I did get the beef sausage. The hashbrowns were fried up in whatever grease was left on the griddle. I was not a fan of the eggs but the girls gobbled them up. My toast was a slice from the huge loaves on the counter. It took all 4 of use to eat it. The cinnamon roll was not my favorite but it was the size of Summers head.
I did take a loaf of bread with us and for the 4 of us all that food was about $50 American. We pay a lot more for worse at home.
After breakfast we finished packing up the camper and headed out. We drove the 40 or so miles to Liard. We did see one black bear on the way. Sill no bison but there was an electronic sign warning of them over the next 90 kilometers so hopefully tomorrow.
We got to the RV park early so we just hung out in the lobby. We were finally allowed to enter and get set-up and headed to the hot springs. Davan was very adamant all day about not going. Even so far she just wanted to stay at the camper. We have no cell service and I would have had to pay for internet which I was not going to do so not sure why she wanted to stay. After telling her she had no choice we were finally off. A short 15 minute walk and we arrived at the hot springs. It had a slight smell of sulfur. Sometimes stronger than others. We forgot out moosescot so Davan agreed to go back and get it. The girls and I jumped in. There were two pools, separated by a dam. The lower pool was about as warm as bathwater, the upper pool was like a hot tub and got progressively hotter as you went farther up the pool.
Davan was taking forever. When she got back she said it took her so long because there was a moose and there was a crowd watching it. We spent about 2 hours at the springs before heading back. We took showers and everyone rested.
The Springs are its own eco system. As the water comes up from the ground the limestone disolves which makes it a milky white color. The moss and algae absorb the limestone and it turns stiff and crunchy. There is a snail that only lives in these springs call the Hotwater Physa. There are also chub that has adapted to the hot water and has been isolated for thousands of years.
Dinner was fajitas. They were excellent. We are currently having a bonfire as I write this. It’s 10 pm and it’s as bright as it is at 7 pm at home.
We are also losing track of what day it is. Several times we have asked each other, not the date, but the actual day of the week. It’s a very odd feeling, but nice.
The campground we are staying at is very quiet. About 30 minutes after we checked in, a caravan showed up. Apparently, there are companies that take cause of all the arrangements and they all travel as a group. The other thing is, we have not seen a single person. Most are coaches, they must have pulled in and only gotten out to set up their Starlink dishes and then holed up inside. I guess I can see the advantage of having all the details planned out, but to not do anything when you get to your destination? Seems like a waste to me. I am easily the youngest person here by 20 years I’m sure.
Tomorrow we enter Yukon and will stay in Teslin.
