Ever have something happen that you thought was going to mess up your day, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise? That’s how my day started out. I have an alarm set on phone to go off every day. Except Sundays. So when I work up and saw that it was 8:45 I inwardly groaned that we were going to be so late getting on the road. I came out of the bedroom to the girls telling me to take a shower and to take my time. When I got out they had breakfast ready for me. Pancakes and eggs. It was really good. They also gave me a coffee mug with pictures of us on it.
Packing up was slow going. We didn’t wash dishes last night so we had a large sink full. I also needed to drain the black tanks and that always takes a bit as I try to get them flushed out really well. We were finally on the road about 11.
We were just cruising along when we saw a sign for a dinosaur museum. We of course had to stop! It was all about the dinosaur’s that roamed the area millions of years ago. Apparently, the region was a huge source of fossils. It was not a huge museum but it was really well done. The girls and I really enjoyed it.
A couple hours later got us to Dawson City. It is the official start to the Alaskan/Canadian Highway! This was a point I was really looking forward to, getting a picture with the ALCAN sign. We of course had to stop at the welcome center and got some souvenirs.
Here is the blessing in disguise. The sky was really dark all morning and I knew we would run into rain. We finally ran into it and it was pretty bad. It was a mixture of pea sized hail, balls of slush and driving rain. To give an idea of how hard it rained, the front of the camper was covered in so many bugs it was more black than white. After the rain it was spotless.
By the time we got to Dawson City the sun was out and we were able to enjoy the area. If we had gotten on the road earlier we would have arrived during the rain.
The rest of the drive was uneventful. We are closer to mountains so lots of ups and downs. We are mostly on 2 lane roads now, so it sucks getting behind semi’s. Most of the grades are averaging 6% with one at 10% so they are crawling up. If we didn’t have the trailer it would have been easy to pass, unfortunately it was many miles of waiting to find a safe enough length to get around them.
We didn’t go to Buckinghorse River. Instead, I found a little campground just south on the Sikanni River. We are now at the point where the campgrounds are now basically gravel lots instead of
We are also far enough north that the days are noticeably longer. It's 11pm as I right this and it's dusk out. Probably no darker than 9pm at home.
We are also seeing lots of signs on the roadways to watch for wildlife as well as signs at the campgrounds to not leave anything out to attract bears. We have not seeing anything yet though. Hopefully soon.
Since it is Father’s day I cooked myself a nice steak. Summer joined me and the other two were on their own for dinner since they didn’t want any of my alternate offerings.
Tomorrow’s stop is at Muncho Lake, BC. It will be our first multi night stop. It will be nice to just relax and go exploring instead of sitting in the truck.
