July 20
Today's destination was Glennallen. I was up late doing laundry last night so I was late getting up. It didn't help that Summer had fallen asleep in my bed. It wouldn't be a big deal except about 5 am she started tossing and turning and she kept kicking and rolling over on me. I did not sleep well.
It was hot today. Around 70 degrees, but the Alaskan sun just hits harder. I had another load of laundry to do this morning so by the time we got packed up and ready to leave it was noon. Luckily check out was noon unlike most places which are 11.
The campground we stayed at in Palmer was one of the nicest I think. Quiet, a fair amount of room. Grass between sites so you were not tracking in gravel. A community fire pit and they had a spot you can leave stuff you don't need. Alot of people rent campers out of Anchorage and Palmer might be a final night destination so people can leave stuff and others like me can take if there is something we need. There was a large bag of pancake mix I wanted but I was going to grab it later and it was gone. I did get free laundry soap as someone left two bottles. I only used it there though and didn't take it. I don't want liquid in the camper. Plus it was nice to not have to use my soap so I didn't want to take that from others.
All the major roads are numbered in Alaska but no one uses them. They all have names and that's what they are referred by. Today the road is called the Glenn Highway. It was one of the more scenic roads we have been on. I wish the road was not so narrow and twisty as I had to pay so much attention to the road I was not able to enjoy the views as much as if I could have been a passenger. I did stop several times for pictures and just to enjoy the view though.
We arrived at our overnight around 4. It's a nice campground right on the Tolsona river. We have a site backed up to the river. If you jumped out the back window you would get wet.
We really didn't do much here. The website claimed fishing in the river so I walked it a bit to see if there were any holes that looked promising. I really was not seeing anything so I went to the office to ask if there were specific spots as most of the river looked to low to have fish in it. I got slightly annoyed with the husband of the couple that runs the place. For some reason she asked where my site was again. When I told her the husband spoke up asking if I was the 5th wheel that was afraid to get to close to the back edge of the site. It kind of pissed me off because I initially fully backed in. I would have stayed there except where they had placed the fire ring, if we had a fire it would literally catch my trailer on fire it was so close. I told him he should know that he placed the ring in a bad spot and I could have backed in farther if he didn't place it there. He shut up and wouldn't talk to me anymore after that.
I went back to the camper after that to work on a little project. Since we will be dry camping I needed a way to power the Starlink from the battery's. I bought a small inverter but it had a cigarette lighter adaptor to get power. I needed to cut that off and put on ring terminals so I could attached them to the power distribution box. Quick and easy. Luckily I had packed a selection of electrical connectors so I had everything I needed.
While I did this an RV pulled into the spot next to us. Out poured 4 guys and a girl. They were a film crew with all the stuff, including GoPro's mounted to various points outside of the RV I'm not sure what they were doing but they started video'ing the girl hooking up the RV. It was very clear they had never hooked up a camper before. They didn't do any practice shot's or retakes though. I did get a laugh when she hooked up the waste hose though. I'm not sure what she did but all of a sudden on of the guys raced into the camper and came back out with a full roll of paper towels and a bottle of disinfectant. The camera and mic operator were cleaning off their equipment along with their arms and legs and the girls was wiping down her arms as well. Somehow they all took a poop shower. The owner had to come out and scoop away the mess as it was starting to smell.
The girls wanted orange chicken. Easy enough I guess. I kind of wanted my chicken fried rice.
I did try to do some fishing after dinner. The mosquito's were horrible. Probably the worst they have been on this entire trip. I did get one nibble but it was just from a fingerling. I finally gave up as I didn't put on any bug spray and I was too lazy to walk back and get some.
We did have a small fire and s'mores.
